Importance of Margashirsha Purnima Vrat

Purnima is considered the most divine lunar phase. Scriptures like Skanda Purana, Padma Purana, Narada Purana and Mahabharata mention that this vrat destroys sins and blesses devotees with happiness, progeny, and good fortune. It is also called Dvatrimshi Purnima Vrat and is said to be especially fruitful for worshipping Lord Vishnu and Lord Chandra. Observing this vrat purifies the mind and enhances devotion.

  • Take a Sankalpa for the well-being of the family.
  • Perform Kalash Sthapana and worship Lord Ganesha.

Fasting Rules: What to Eat and Avoid

  • Avoid: Grains, heavy spices, tea, coffee, tobacco and all tamasic food items.
  • Some devotees also follow Nirjala fasting (waterless fasting) based on their capacity.
Parana: Breaking the Fast

The vrat is typically concluded after Moon worship in the evening. Before breaking the fast, devotees donate ghee, sesame, rice, clothes or food to Brahmins as per their capability. After offering food and dakshina to a Brahmin, the devotee may eat fruits or light sattvic food.

Udyapana Vidhi: Conclusion of the Vrat

The Udyapana of this vrat is done on an auspicious Purnima, especially in Jyeshtha month. As guided in Bhavishya Purana:

  • Kalash Sthapana, Uma-Maheshwara Puja and devotional singing are performed.
  • Next morning, Havana is conducted with 108 ahutis using sesame, barley and ghee.
  • Thirty-two fruits and charity to 32 Brahmins and 32 women are prescribed.
  • Donating a cow with calf is mentioned for those able to do so.

Completing Udyapana ensures full spiritual reward and lasting prosperity.
