The Maha Kumbh 2025 continues to draw millions of devotees to Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. On the auspicious occasion of Mauni Amavasya, over 5.51 million devotees took a holy dip at the sacred Triveni Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers. According to the Uttar Pradesh Information Department, a total of 45.11 lakh pilgrims had already visited the event by 8 a.m. on Thursday, with more than 10 lakh Kalpwasis—devotees who reside temporarily on the riverbank during Kumbh—currently present at the site.

This sacred ritual marks the second Amrit Snan, a ceremonial bath considered highly auspicious during the Maha Kumbh. As of January 29, over 275 million devotees have performed snan (holy bathing) since the festival began.

Despite the grand celebrations, a tragic incident overshadowed the event on Wednesday morning. A stampede-like situation arose at the Maha Kumbh, leading to the death of at least 30 individuals and injuring 60 others. Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Kumbh, Vaibhav Krishna, confirmed that 25 bodies have been identified. The mishap occurred as millions gathered at the Sangam for the ceremonial bath on Mauni Amavasya.

Authorities temporarily halted the proceedings but resumed later with smaller processions of saints arriving at the Sangam for the snan.

The Uttar Pradesh government has announced financial assistance of ₹25 lakh for the families of the deceased. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has ordered a judicial inquiry into the incident. A three-member judicial commission, headed by Justice Harsh Kumar, former Director General VK Gupta, and retired IAS officer DK Singh, has been constituted to investigate the cause of the mishap.

The Chief Minister emphasized the administration's efforts to ensure safety and stated that the committee will submit its findings within a set timeframe.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. “The accident at the Prayagraj Maha Kumbh is extremely sad. My deepest condolences to those who have lost their loved ones, and I wish for the speedy recovery of the injured. The administration is making every effort to assist the victims. I am in constant touch with the Chief Minister and the state government,” PM Modi said in a statement.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah also expressed his condolences to the bereaved families and stated that he is in regular contact with the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister and local authorities to monitor the situation closely.

The Maha Kumbh is one of the largest religious gatherings in the world, and managing such an event poses significant challenges. Authorities have intensified arrangements to ensure the safety and convenience of the millions of devotees flocking to the festival. Crowd management, medical facilities, and other essential services have been prioritized to prevent further mishaps.

Despite the tragic event, the spiritual fervour at the Maha Kumbh remains strong, with devotees continuing to participate in the holy rituals and seeking blessings at the Triveni Sangam. The festival, which symbolises faith, devotion, and unity, continues to be a beacon of spiritual strength for millions worldwide.
