Kurma Jayanti 2025 Today: Why do we celebrate Kurma Jayanti? Know details here

Kurma Jayanti 2025 marks the sacred appearance day of Lord Vishnu's second incarnation, known as Kurma Avatara, which took place during the Satya Yuga. This divine day is celebrated with great devotion across India, especially in Vishnu temples, where special pujas and rituals are performed to honour this unique avatar of the Lord.

What Is Kurma Jayanti?

Kurma Jayanti is observed as the birth anniversary of Lord Vishnu in His tortoise form. In Sanskrit, Kurma means tortoise. According to Hindu scriptures, during the time of the great cosmic event known as Samudra Manthan (the churning of the ocean), the mighty Mount Mandarachala was used as a churning rod. But the mountain began to sink into the ocean. To save the day, Lord Vishnu took the form of a giant tortoise (Kurma) and balanced the mountain on His back, allowing the devas (gods) and asuras (demons) to continue the churning process.

This act is one of the most well-known and significant stories from Vishnu's Dashavatara (the ten major incarnations) and is revered for the message of support, stability, and divine intervention.

On this day, devotees observe fasts, perform special Vishnu pujas, chant Vishnu Sahasranama, and listen to stories of Kurma Avatara. In temples, the deity is decorated in forms resembling a tortoise, and abhishekams (ritual bathing) are conducted with sacred items like milk, honey, and ghee.

Kurma Jayanti is not just a celebration of a divine form—it’s a reminder of spiritual endurance, protection, and balance. Just as Lord Vishnu supported the mountain during the cosmic churn, devotees believe that praying to Him on this day will bring stability, strength, and support in their personal and spiritual lives.

Kurma Jayanti 2025 is being celebrated today to honour Lord Vishnu's Kurma Avatara, who played a crucial role during the churning of the ocean. This festival is a reminder of divine support in times of challenge and is marked by rituals, prayers, and deep devotion.
