Karwa Chauth 2024 Samagri List

Karwa Chauth is a significant festival celebrated by married women in India, particularly in the northern regions. This year it will be celebrated on Sunday, October 20, 2024. On this day, women observe a fast from sunrise to moonrise, praying for the long life and well-being of their husbands. Along with fasting, the Karwa Chauth Puja holds immense importance, and to perform the rituals correctly, it's essential to have all the required items (samagri) ready.

Karwa Chauth 2024: Essential Puja Samagri

Here is a detailed list of the necessary items for the Karwa Chauth Puja:

  • Karwa (Earthen Pot): This is a central item for the Puja. The earthen pot is filled with water and is used during the moon-sighting ritual. It symbolizes prosperity and is offered to the moon.
  • Puja Thali: A decorative thali (plate) with all the Puja essentials, including a diya (lamp), incense sticks, flowers, and kumkum (vermilion), which are used during the aarti.
  • Sieve (Chalni): A sieve is traditionally used during the moon-sighting ritual, through which women view the moon before breaking their fast.
  • Sindoor (Vermilion): Applying sindoor is a significant ritual for married women, symbolizing their marital status.
  • Diya (Lamp): A diya, usually made of clay, is lit and placed on the Puja thali, symbolizing light and positivity.
  • Roli (Red Powder) and Chawal (Rice): These items are used for tilak, marking the forehead with a red dot as a sign of respect and devotion.
  • Naivedya (Offerings): Fruits, sweets, and nuts are offered to Goddess Parvati during the Puja. Sweets like kheer, halwa, or laddoos are commonly used.
  • Flowers and Garlands: Fresh flowers are used to decorate the Puja area and are offered to the deities as a symbol of purity and devotion.
  • Mehendi (Henna): Many women also apply mehendi as part of the Karwa Chauth tradition. It is considered a sign of prosperity and is applied to both hands and feet.
  • Mathri and Sweets: Traditionally, a special type of snack called mathri is prepared for the fast, along with other sweets like ladoos, barfis, and kheer.

Karwa Chauth Puja Procedure
  • Once the necessary samagri is arranged, the Karwa Chauth Puja begins in the evening. Married women dress in their best attire, usually in traditional sarees or lehengas, and apply mehendi on their hands as part of the celebration.
  • The Puja thali is decorated with all the required items like the Karwa pot, diya, roli, and flowers. Women gather with their thalis and listen to the Karwa Chauth Katha (story) narrated by an elder or a priest. This story usually revolves around the significance of Karwa Chauth and the devotion of women toward their husbands.
  • After the Puja, the fast is concluded after sighting the moon. Women view the moon through the sieve and offer water to it from the Karwa pot. This is followed by receiving blessings from their husbands, who then offer them food and water to break the fast.

Each item used in the Puja holds symbolic significance, representing the devotion and love a married woman has for her husband. The earthen pot symbolizes prosperity, the diya represents light and hope, and the sieve used for viewing the moon symbolizes the removal of obstacles in married life.

Karwa Chauth is not just a day of fasting, but a celebration of the marital bond and the love shared between a husband and wife. By ensuring that all the necessary Puja samagri is prepared beforehand, married women can perform the rituals with devotion and seek blessings for a long and prosperous married life. Make sure to gather all the essential items, and celebrate Karwa Chauth 2024 with traditional fervor and joy.
