Kartik Purnima Vrat Significance

Kartik Purnima is considered highly sacred in Hindu tradition. It is said that observing this fast destroys sins, increases virtue, and purifies the soul. The Dvatrimshi Purnima Vrat begins from the full moon of Margashirsha, Magha, or Vaishakha and concludes on the Purnima of Bhadrapada or Pausha.

Devotees worship Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, Goddess Lakshmi, and Lord Chandra on this day for divine blessings. Worshipping the full moon (Purnima Chandra) is believed to bring peace, prosperity, and fulfillment of wishes.

Purnima Vrat Puja Vidhi

On the day of Kartik Purnima, devotees wake up early and take a holy bath in a sacred river or at home using Gangajal. After bathing, they take a Sankalpa (vow) for fasting and start the puja with Lord Ganesha’s worship for removing obstacles.

  • Kalash Sthapana is done first.
  • Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati are worshipped through Shodashopachara Puja Vidhi.
  • Then, devotees worship Lord Vishnu, Goddess Lakshmi, and Lord Chandra.
  • The entire day is spent in fasting, chanting mantras, and bhajan-kirtan.
  • In the evening, devotees offer Arghya (water offering) to the full moon and listen to or recite the Purnima Vrat Katha. Performing Satyanarayana Puja on this day brings additional blessings.
Fasting Rules and Food Guidelines

During Purnima Upavasa, most devotees consume only fruits, milk, and water. Some observe a nirjala vrat (complete fast without water). Grains, spices, tobacco, tea, and coffee are strictly avoided as they are considered tamasic.

Purnima Vrat Parana (Breaking the Fast)

The Parana or breaking of the fast is done after offering Arghya to Lord Chandra in the evening. Before ending the fast, devotees donate food, ghee, clothes, sesame seeds, and rice to Brahmins. After giving Dakshina, they may consume fruits or light sattvic food.

Udyapana Vidhi (Conclusion Ceremony)

According to the Bhavishya Purana, the Udyapana Vidhi of this vrat should be performed on the Purnima of Jyeshtha or any auspicious full moon. The process includes:

  • Cleaning the puja space and setting up a Kalash in the center.
  • Installing Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati (Uma-Maheshwara) idols and performing sixteen-step worship.
  • Conducting night vigil, devotional singing, and a Havan using the Shiva Panchakshara Mantra with 108 oblations.
  • Donating fruits, food, and Dakshina to 32 Brahmins and women, symbolizing completion of the 32 Purnima fasts.
  • Offering a cow (or equivalent donation) to receive divine blessings.
  • Completing the ceremony with Purnahuti (final offering) and sharing prasad.
Kartik Purnima Upavasa: Benefits

Observing Dvatrimshi Purnima Vrat removes obstacles, grants progeny, brings happiness, and ensures spiritual growth. It purifies the mind, strengthens family bonds, and pleases deities like Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, and Lord Chandra. Devotees who observe this fast with devotion attain peace, wealth, prosperity, and ultimately, Moksha (liberation).
