On Kamika Ekadashi, the fasting period extends from sunrise on Ekadashi day until sunrise on the following day. Parana, which is the act of breaking the fast, should ideally be performed after sunrise on the day following Ekadashi. It is crucial to complete the Parana within the Dwadashi Tithi (the 12th lunar day) unless it concludes before sunrise.

One should avoid breaking the fast during the Hari Vasara—the first one-fourth duration of the Dwadashi Tithi. The preferred time for Parana is during Pratahkal (early morning), and it is advisable to avoid doing so during Madhyahna (midday). If one cannot break the fast-during Pratahkal, then it should be done after Madhyahna.

Kamika Ekadashi Fasting Guidelines

For those observing Ekadashi fasting, there are variations in practice:

  • Regular Observers: It is often suggested that families (Smartha) observe the fast on the first day of Ekadashi. This practice is generally suitable for most devotees.
  • Alternate Ekadashi: On occasions when fasting on two consecutive Ekadashi days is advised, the second day of fasting (the alternate Ekadashi) is especially recommended for Sanyasis, widows, or those seeking Moksha (liberation). This alternate fasting day typically coincides with Vaishnava Ekadashi.
  • Sincere Devotees: Devotees with a deep reverence for Lord Vishnu may choose to observe the fast on both Ekadashi days to deepen their spiritual connection and seek the Lord’s blessings.

Kamika Ekadashi Significance

Kamika Ekadashi is renowned for its spiritual benefits. Observing this fast is believed to purify the mind, body, and soul, leading to the accumulation of positive karma and divine grace. Devotees who adhere to the rituals of Kamika Ekadashi with devotion and sincerity are said to attain the love and affection of Lord Vishnu, paving the way for spiritual growth and liberation.

By following the proper rituals and timings of Kamika Ekadashi, devotees seek to align themselves with divine energy and earn blessings for a prosperous and harmonious life.
