Meaning of Gangaur Festival

The name Gangaur is derived from two words. “Gan” refers to Lord Shiva, while “Gaur” represents Goddess Parvati. The festival symbolises the divine union of Shiva and Parvati and celebrates marital devotion, love, and fertility. During this festival, unmarried girls pray for a good life partner, while married women seek blessings for the long life and well-being of their husbands.

Gangaur Puja: Rituals and Traditions

The Gangaur puja rituals are deeply rooted in tradition and devotion. Women wake up early, observe a fast, and perform prayers dedicated to Goddess Parvati. Important rituals include:

  • Creating Gaura Mata idols using clay or sand
  • Decorating the idols with ornaments and flowers
  • Offering prayers, sweets, and water to the goddess
  • Singing traditional Gangaur folk songs
  • Listening to the Gangaur Vrat Katha in the evening

In some traditions, women observe the fast by consuming milk once during the day, which is believed to bring marital happiness and blessings.

Gangaur Festival During Chaitra Navratri

Gangaur is also connected with Chaitra Navratri celebrations. On this day, women perform Solah Shringar (sixteen adornments) and worship Goddess Parvati with great devotion.

A special ritual involves placing the idol of Gaura Mata near a river or water body and offering water to the deity. The idol is usually immersed the following day, symbolising the goddess returning to her marital home.

Traditionally, the place where Gangaur Puja is performed is considered the maternal home of Goddess Parvati, while the immersion location symbolises her in-laws’ house.
