High in the historic Ranthambore Fort of Rajasthan lies a temple that holds a rare distinction in Hindu faith—the Trinetra Ganesh Temple, the only shrine in the world where Lord Ganesha is worshipped along with his entire family. On Ganesh Chaturthi 2025, this 700-year-old temple will once again welcome thousands of devotees who come to seek the blessings of Bappa, his consorts Riddhi and Siddhi, sons Shubh and Labh, and his divine vehicle, Mushak (the mouse).
The origins of this sacred temple go back to 1299 AD when King Hammir of Ranthambore faced a long siege by Alauddin Khilji. With supplies running out, the king prayed to Lord Ganesha for help. That night, he dreamt of the deity, who promised to remove his troubles. At dawn, a miracle occurred an idol of Lord Ganesha with three eyes (Trinetra) emerged from the fort wall, and the king’s storage houses mysteriously filled with food and essentials. Soon after, the siege ended, and in gratitude, King Hammir built the temple in 1300 AD, installing idols of Ganesha’s family alongside him.
Meaning of “Trinetra”
The word Trinetra means “three-eyed.” This form of Lord Ganesha is considered a rare and powerful symbol of wisdom, divine vision, and protection. It reminds devotees that Ganesha not only blesses them with prosperity but also with insight to overcome obstacles in life.
Why This Temple Is Unique?
Unlike other Ganesh temples in India, the Trinetra Ganesh Temple in Ranthambore presents a complete family setting.
Ganesh Chaturthi Celebrations in Ranthambore
Every year, Ganesh Chaturthi is celebrated with grandeur at the temple. The fort resounds with aartis, bhajans, and chants in praise of Lord Ganesha. Devotees from Rajasthan and nearby states walk long distances, carrying offerings and singing devotional songs. This tradition has been alive for more than seven centuries, making it one of the most enduring Ganesh festivals in India.
The Unique Tradition of Letters to Lord Ganesha
One of the most fascinating customs here is the tradition of sending letters and invitations to Lord Ganesha.
