Narak Chaturdashi marks the second day of the five-day Diwali festival, following Dhanteras and preceding Lakshmi Puja. It is believed that performing rituals and the sacred bath, known as Abhyang Snan, on this day helps one cleanse the body and soul, and protects from negativity and misfortune.
According to Hindu belief, those who perform Abhyang Snan on Narak Chaturdashi are freed from sins and avoid suffering in Naraka (hell). It is also said that this sacred bath symbolizes purification before welcoming Goddess Lakshmi on Diwali night.
Abhyang Snan Vidhi
During Abhyang Snan, people wake up before sunrise and apply til (sesame) oil mixed with ubtan (herbal paste) on their bodies. This oil bath is considered auspicious and spiritually purifying. After the ritual, devotees wear clean clothes and light diyas to dispel darkness and invite divine blessings.
Puja Muhurat and Rituals
The Abhyang Snan Muhurat on Narak Chaturdashi falls between moonrise and sunrise while Chaturdashi Tithi prevails. Performing the ritual during this period is believed to be the most effective for spiritual cleansing and protection from evil influences.
Difference Between Kali Chaudas and Narak Chaturdashi
Although Kali Chaudas and Narak Chaturdashi often fall on the same Tithi, they are two distinct observances. Kali Chaudas is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Kali and warding off evil forces, while Narak Chaturdashi focuses on Abhyang Snan and cleansing rituals.
Other Names of Choti Diwali
Choti Diwali is also called Roop Chaturdashi or Roop Chaudas, as it is believed that taking an oil bath and offering prayers enhances beauty, radiance, and positivity before Diwali.
Choti Diwali, or Narak Chaturdashi, is not only a day of physical purification but also of spiritual renewal. Through rituals like Abhyang Snan and diya lighting, devotees prepare themselves to welcome light, prosperity, and divine blessings into their homes on the main day of Diwali.
