Bilva Nimantran 2024

Bilva Nimantran is a significant ritual that marks the beginning of the Durga Puja celebrations, especially observed on the Shashthi Tithi. In 2024, Bilva Nimantran will take place on Tuesday, 8th October. This auspicious day is not only important for invoking the blessings of Goddess Durga but also for performing various rituals that set the tone for the upcoming festivities.

Bilva Nimantran is performed during the Shashthi Tithi, ideally coinciding with Sanyakal (the twilight period). Sometimes, the Shashthi Tithi may end before Sanyakal, but if it overlaps with the previous day’s Panchami Tithi, this period is considered even more suitable for performing the Bilva Nimantran. The ritual involves a combination of Sanyakal and Shashthi Tithi, regarded as the most appropriate time for Bilva Puja.

Bilva Nimantran 2024: Rituals

The rituals conducted during Bilva Nimantran are an integral part of the Durga Puja celebrations and include:

1. Kalparambha

Kalparambha is performed early in the morning, ideally during the Pratahkal (morning hours). This ritual marks the initiation of the Durga Puja, which involves:

  • Installing a water-filled Ghata or Kalash (pot) as a symbol of prosperity and purity.
  • Offering prayers to Goddess Durga, expressing devotion and taking Sankalpa (a firm determination) to conduct the puja ritualistically over the next three days, which are Maha Saptami, Maha Ashtami, and Maha Navami.

2. Bodhon (Akal Bodhon)

Bodhon, also known as Akal Bodhon, is performed during Sanyakal. This ritual signifies the awakening of Goddess Durga, as it is believed that all deities fall asleep for six months during Dakshiyana. The Bodhon ritual involves:

  • Installing a water-filled Kalash at the base of the Bilva tree, which holds special significance as the leaves of this tree are sacred for Shiva worship.
  • Offering prayers to awaken Goddess Durga, symbolically representing her readiness to accept worship after her slumber.

The Bodhon ritual holds historical significance, recalling how Lord Rama awakened Goddess Durga to seek her blessings before battling the demon Ravana.

3. Adhivas and Amantran

Following Bodhon, the rituals of Adhivas and Amantran take place:

  • Adhivas (अधिवास): This involves the symbolic installation of Goddess Durga into the Bilva tree after invoking her presence (Avahana). The Bilva tree is sanctified during this rite, establishing a sacred space for the goddess.
  • Amantran (आमंत्रण): After Adhivas, the next step is to invite Goddess Durga to grace the Navpatrika Puja, which is to be performed the following day. This ritual signifies the formal invitation extended to the goddess to be part of the celebrations.
