This West Bengal Kali Temple Has Free Electricity Thanks to Bhutan

The Makrapara Kali Temple in Birpara, Alipurduar district, West Bengal, has had its electricity bills paid by the Royal Government of Bhutan for decades—dating all the way back to the British era. The temple, located just five meters from the Bhutanese border, is not only a sacred site for local worshippers but also holds special significance for the Bhutanese community living nearby.

The temple’s proximity to Bhutan has led to a unique tradition: residents of Bhutan not only ensure the temple’s electricity is provided without interruption but also assist in its upkeep. Every year, before Kali Puja, Bhutanese residents supply essential renovation materials, including cement and paint, to maintain the temple’s structure.

Originally located in a more vulnerable area, the temple often faced destruction from elephant attacks. In 1950, it was relocated to a hilltop to safeguard it from wildlife. At that time, the area lacked electricity. Recognizing the temple’s importance to devotees on both sides of the border, the Bhutanese government took the initiative to provide electricity—without installing a meter, ensuring the temple had power year-round. This tradition continues to this day.

Historically, Makrapara Kali Temple observed animal sacrifices, a practice dating back to the British era. However, these rituals were discontinued around ten years ago. Currently, tender coconuts are offered during Kali Puja, which coincides with Diwali, and the ceremony takes place at midnight.

While Bhutan’s majority practices Vajrayana Buddhism—which does not involve the worship of Goddess Kali, the Lhotshampa community, a Hindu ethnic group of Nepalese descent residing in southern Bhutan, maintains Hindu traditions. This community worships Goddess Kali and other deities, providing a cultural link between Bhutan and the temple in West Bengal.
