Aadi Pooram, also known as Andal Jayanthi, is a sacred festival celebrated during the Tamil month of Aadi (July–August) when the Pooram Nakshatra (Purva Phalguni star) prevails. This day holds immense spiritual importance as it marks the birth star of Andal, the only female Alwar saint in the Vaishnava tradition, believed to be an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi. Spiritual Importance of Aadi Pooram

The month of Aadi is dedicated to Goddess Shakti, as divine feminine energy is considered at its peak. It is believed that Goddess Parvati descends to Earth on Aadi Pooram to bless her devotees. Many traditions also associate this day with Parvati’s attainment of womanhood, and special rituals are performed in Shakti temples, celebrating the divine feminine power.

Legends Associated with Aadi Pooram

One of the most popular legends relates to Andal’s life. Periyalwar, a Vaishnavite saint of Srivilliputhur, found a baby girl, Kodhai (Andal), in a temple garden. Andal grew up deeply devoted to Lord Ranganathar (Vishnu) and wished to marry Him. She offered Him garlands she wore herself, a gesture later accepted by the Lord. It is believed that Andal merged with Lord Ranganathar at Srirangam, symbolizing eternal union.

Another legend connects Aadi Pooram with Goddess Parvati. In Tamil Nadu, this day is also celebrated as Valaikappu (bangle ceremony), symbolizing blessings for pregnant women. According to folklore, Goddess Parvati, disguised as a midwife, helped a woman in labor, leading to this annual ritual.

Aadi Pooram Rituals

  • Special Poojas and Homas are performed in Vaishnavite and Shakti temples.
  • Srivilliputhur Andal Temple celebrates with grandeur, as does Srirangam Temple, where a 10-day festival concludes with the divine marriage of Andal and Lord Ranganathar.
  • Unmarried women pray for a good life partner on this day, especially during the divine wedding ceremony.
  • Devotees offer glass bangles to Goddess Shakti, later distributed to devotees, symbolizing fertility, protection, and blessings for progeny.
  • Chanting of Thiruppavai (30 hymns) and Naachiar Thirumozhi (143 hymns), Andal’s devotional compositions, marks the celebrations.
Benefits of Observing Aadi Pooram

Devotees believe that celebrating Aadi Pooram brings:

  • Prosperity and happiness in life
  • Blessings for progeny and protection of the unborn child
  • Grace of Goddess Shakti and Andal for a harmonious marital life
Why Aadi Pooram is Special in 2025?

In 2025, Aadi Pooram will be observed with elaborate rituals and temple festivities across Tamil Nadu. Devotees will gather at Srivilliputhur, Srirangam, and other Shakti temples to seek divine blessings for their families and spiritual growth.
