Aadi Pooram, also known as Andal Jayanthi, is a sacred festival celebrated during the Tamil month of Aadi (July–August) when the Pooram Nakshatra (Purva Phalguni star) prevails. This day holds immense spiritual importance as it marks the birth star of Andal, the only female Alwar saint in the Vaishnava tradition, believed to be an incarnation of Goddess Lakshmi. Andal grew up deeply devoted to Lord Ranganathar (Vishnu) and wished to marry Him. She offered Him garlands she wore herself, a gesture later accepted by the Lord. It is believed that Andal merged with Lord Ranganathar at Srirangam, symbolizing eternal union.
Another legend connects Aadi Pooram with Goddess Parvati. In Tamil Nadu, this day is also celebrated as Valaikappu (bangle ceremony), symbolizing blessings for pregnant women. According to folklore, Goddess Parvati, disguised as a midwife, helped a woman in labor, leading to this annual ritual.
