Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday made a bold assertion during a public gathering, declaring that if Pakistan does not overtake India in terms of progress, “then my name is not Shehbaz Sharif.”
` He emphasized his vision of making Pakistan a self-sufficient nation, reducing reliance on foreign loans, and boosting its economic standing on the global stage, reported News18.
“If we don’t leave India behind, then my name is not Shehbaz Sharif. We will make Pakistan a great nation and move ahead of India,” he declared, underscoring his determination to outpace the neighboring country.
Sharif also pointed to a decline in inflation under his government, claiming it had dropped from 40% when he took office to just 2% today. While no official data was cited to support this claim, his remarks were aimed at reassuring the public about Pakistan’s economic direction.
Social media reacts
Sharif’s comments quickly gained traction on social media, triggering a mix of humor and skepticism. Many users on X (formerly Twitter) mocked his declaration, suggesting that if he fails to achieve his goal, he may need a new name.
One user quipped, “We’ll have to come up with a new name,” while another sarcastically remarked, “Dawai nahi liya aaj ka, lost his mental balance” (Didn’t take his medicine today, lost his mental balance). Others ridiculed his confidence, with one suggesting, “Leave Champions Trophy, they should host Clown Olympics—it’ll be an instant hit.”
Notably, Sharif’s remarks come just weeks after he expressed a desire for peaceful dialogue with India. Earlier this month, during a special session of the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) Legislative Assembly on "Kashmir Solidarity Day," he had stated that Pakistan was keen to resolve all outstanding issues with India, including the Kashmir dispute, through diplomatic talks.
His latest statement, however, reflects a more competitive tone, signaling a shift in messaging amid Pakistan’s economic and political challenges.
