After excess rain in July, Mumbai seems to be heading for below normal rain this month. The city received record breaking rainfall of 1461 mm in July against the long period average of 800 mm. This month, Mumbai has received a total of 392.7 mm of rain till now, against the monthly normal of 529.7 mm, signifying a deficiency of about 26%.
August also began on a very positive note for Mumbai. Till the 6th of August the city had observed 205 mm of rain, with 88 mm being observed on the first day of the month alone. From the 6th till the 12th of August there had been 91 mm of rain in the city, heaviest being 44 mm, on 7th August. And from 13th to 20th August there was only 30 mm of rain in Mumbai, highest being 15 mm on 15th August. The city of Mumbai observed some good rain of 30 mm on the 21st. However, there has been a modest drop in the weather activity since then.
Interestingly, it has rained every day in August but rainfall kind of tapered off after the first week, which itself observed 237 mm of rain. The figures above indicate that there have been no heavy spell and only light rain has been observed since then. A couple of moderate spells have also been experienced.
Presently, a low level cyclonic circulation off Maharashtra coast is likely to cause some more wet spells in coming days over Mumbai and surrounding areas. However, rain is unlikely to catch up with normal average in next 2 to 3 days but the deficiency, which presently stands at 28%, may reduce to approximately about 20%.
Meanwhile, a fresh system developing in the Bay of Bengal is expected to help in the revival of Monsoon. The system will take a southerly track and move across Odisha, south Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra and finally dissipate after reaching Konkan and Goa. Therefore, according to latest weather update by Skymet Meteorology Division in India, the weekend could see some productive rain over Mumbai.
Quantitative estimates for a particular place are generally difficult but good showers in last 2 days of the month cannot be possibly ruled out.
