A vast number of people now spend significant time scrolling through short videos and online content.

As intermittent fasting continues to find favour among health enthusiasts worldwide, a parallel movement is gaining traction in the digital sphere—digital fasting. With the hashtag #DigitalFasting trending on X (formerly Twitter), users shared experiences and urged others to take intentional breaks from constant connectivity in order to improve their mental well-being.

What is Digital Fasting?

Also referred to as a digital detox, digital fasting involves abstaining from the use of digital devices and technology—such as smartphones, tablets and computers—for a set period. The goal is to reduce screen time, curb distractions, and reclaim mental clarity.

Individuals practising digital fasting often avoid social media platforms to limit comparison and sensory overload. Others mute or turn off mobile notifications to reduce interruptions. While some opt for daily device-free hours, others choose to completely unplug for a weekend or longer.

Proponents of digital fasting highlight its tangible benefits. Users claim that stepping away from the virtual world has helped them reconnect with themselves, reduce anxiety, and sleep better.

Improved Mental Health: Avoiding non-essential social media use was reported to reduce stress and anxiety.

Better Sleep Quality: Limiting screen exposure, particularly before bedtime, enabled users to sleep more restfully.

Increased Productivity: With fewer distractions, many found themselves more focused and efficient in their daily activities.

A vast number of people now spend significant time scrolling through short videos and online content. Although social media provides a platform for global connection, critics argue it also promotes overconsumption of information and contributes to emotional fatigue.

The implications of excessive screen time on children and adolescents were also raised. Diana Quadros, a Psychologist and Clinical Hypnotherapist based in Mumbai, told NDTV: “As a psychologist, I've seen firsthand the devastating impact of excessive digital device use on mental and emotional well-being. It can lead to feelings of loneliness, decreased self-esteem and a sense of disconnection from the world around us.”

She warned that young people are especially vulnerable. “Our children are especially vulnerable, with excessive screen time linked to delayed cognitive development and increased risk of ADHD. It's time for us to take a step back, reassess our relationship with technology, and prioritise our well-being,” she said.

A 2023 study published by the United States government and featured in the National Library of Medicine echoed these concerns. Titled “Effects of Excessive Screen Time on Child Development: An Updated Review and Strategies for Management”, the study found that heavy reliance on screen media raised serious public health concerns—even among children as young as two to three years old.

The report concluded that new technologies have become integral to daily life, especially among the young, who are now “digital natives” born into a rapidly evolving media ecosystem. While digital tools can enhance education and learning, the study warned:

“Too much time spent in front of a screen and multitasking with other media has been related to worse executive functioning and academic performance.”
