A Swiggy delivery rider has shared the most challenging and disliked aspect of her job, sparking widespread conversation on social media. Amritha, a part-time delivery agent working to earn extra income while completing her education, revealed that walking through Asia’s second-largest mall to collect orders was a time-consuming and physically demanding part of her role.

In a viral Instagram Reel, Amritha, who refers to herself as the “Swiggy girl,” expressed frustration over the lack of additional compensation for the lengthy process. Although she did not specify the mall’s name, viewers speculated that she was referring to one of the LuLu malls in Kerala.

Amritha explained that Swiggy pays a minimum of Rs 25 for deliveries within a 5-kilometre radius. However, collecting orders from sprawling malls often required delivery agents to spend an extra 15–20 minutes navigating the premises. This included parking their vehicles in designated areas, taking service elevators to food courts, and walking considerable distances to reach restaurants.

Adding to the delay, delivery agents were required to use the crowded public exits after picking up the orders, further exacerbating the time lost.

“There is no extra allowance for these orders. We almost lose 10–20 minutes just to take those orders. Also, after taking the orders, we have to take the normal exit, which is also crowded normally,” she stated in her post.

Amritha highlighted additional frustrations, such as long waits for service elevators and navigating through heavy foot traffic in the mall.

In her post, Amritha offered two suggestions to alleviate these challenges:

Improved Order Collection Points: She urged mall management to establish dedicated food collection points on lower floors, eliminating the need for delivery agents to traverse long distances.

Additional Compensation: She called on Swiggy to provide extra payment for riders completing such arduous pickups, considering the significant time and effort involved.

“Why can’t the malls collect orders to the lower level to make our job easier? Or why are we not getting paid extra?” she asked.

The video, which garnered 3.5 million views, received mixed reactions. While some commenters criticised Amritha for complaining about her job, others empathised with her plight and called for better treatment of delivery workers.

Critical comments included: “That’s called doing your job. If you can’t do it, then just quit,” wrote one user.

“As usual, a woman trying a job a man has been doing for years, finds it’s not that easy, and starts complaining,” another added.

Supportive users countered these criticisms, highlighting the difficulties faced by delivery agents.

“The comments here are appalling. Put yourself in their shoes and understand their difficulties,” one user wrote.

“Some malls really do delivery guys dirty—no main entrance, no using elevators, escalators, or even restrooms meant for customers,” another added.

This is not the first time delivery riders have voiced concerns about the challenges of collecting orders from large malls. In October, Swiggy founder Deepinder Goyal shared a video documenting his own “inhumane” experience retrieving food from Gurugram’s Ambience Mall. His video detailed sneaking past security guards, climbing multiple flights of stairs, and navigating the premises to collect an order.

Following widespread criticism, Ambience Mall management implemented measures to improve conditions for delivery workers, including dedicated access routes and pick-up points.
