A cloud engineer sparked debate online after comparing his Rs 79.05 lakh income in Canada with a Rs 26.78 LPA FAANG offer in India, saying that the "rupee conversion doesn't tell the whole story." And highlighting the high cost of living and personal challenges.
“Canada $85k Cloud Engineer vs FAANG India Rs 26.78 LPA — which makes more sense for my situation?” the individual wrote in a Reddit post, adding, “Currently working in Canada as a Cloud Engineer at $85k. Solo here, the entire family is in India. Just got a FAANG offer in India at ₹26.78 LPA.”
The techie explained, “On paper the Canada number looks bigger but I'm alone here, spending heavily on rent and cost of living, and the rupee conversion doesn't tell the whole story.”
The person urged users to share genuine opinions, not just on finances but also on how the move would affect their lifestyle.
The post triggered intense discussion on social media, leaving users divided over whether he should return to India.
One user advised that securing PR and citizenship in Canada could be life-changing not just for him but for future generations. They said he should not fear the grind, as better opportunities can come later, and argued that the move abroad offers more stability.
Another added that $85K is relatively low and suggested aiming for higher pay by switching jobs, saying their own move abroad was about more than money.
A third commenter argued that Rs 26.78 LPA in India outweighs a $85K salary in Canada.
Another pointed out that $85K is on the lower side and said earning over $125K would make it easier to manage expenses, adding that FAANG experience could be valuable.
One said that Rs 26.78 LPA in India holds more value than $85K in Canada, while another noted that the Canadian salary is relatively low due to high living costs, suggesting that $125K or more would be ideal and adding that FAANG experience could significantly boost future opportunities.
