An elderly couple in Bengaluru was struck by a speeding delivery rider on Monday afternoon, leaving the woman, aged in her 60s, in significant pain. A local resident, who witnessed the incident, promptly transported her to a nearby hospital, where medical examinations revealed no fractures.
The incident has reignited concerns about the safety risks posed by delivery riders speeding through the city's streets to meet tight deadlines. Expressing frustration, one user remarked, "The government can easily ban this nonsensical 10-minute rush delivery, but they won't."
Another individual noted, "It's not just about speed; it's the reckless attitude. They cut corners while turning, and most don't have rearview mirrors. Even if they do, it's just an accessory for them."
Heard a loud bang near my home this afternoon. An elderly couple had been hit by a #Swiggy delivery rider. The woman, in her 60s, was in severe pain I rushed her to a nearby hospital. Thankfully, no fractures.Delivery bikes are constantly zipping through our roads, often in a pic.twitter.com/Vi4TkPXqr8Sivasubramaniam Jayaraman (@JsivaUrbantranz) March 24, 2025
Some users suggested holding bike rental services accountable, with one commenting, "Please also tag the bike provider if it was a rented bike. Those drivers are the most irresponsible and flout rules because they know cops won't catch them anyway." Others pointed out a general neglect for traffic regulations, stating, "Delivery partners just cut across lanes, enter from the wrong side, and are always on their phones. Absolutely no rules followed."
"The problem is US as a society. We want deliveries in unreal time frames and the fact that these companies are growing rapidly, they are forcing these riders to rush for collecting a higher fee. Insane loop of irresponsible behaviour from all parties involved," another user commented.
This incident adds to a series of accidents involving delivery agents in Bengaluru. In August 2024, a 21-year-old delivery executive named Mahesh was killed in a road rage incident in Sapthagiri Layout, Vidyaranyapura. Mahesh was chased by a car after a minor altercation and, upon losing control, crashed into a wall, suffering fatal head injuries.
In another case, a 24-year-old food delivery agent named Manjunath was fatally struck by a lorry in Byatarayanapura, western Bengaluru, in November 2024. The lorry collided with Manjunath's scooter from behind at high speed, leading to severe injuries that resulted in his death.
Meanwhile, Swiggy's customer care handleon X responded to Sivasubramaniam Jayaraman's post on X and asked for information on the delivery agent to take action.
"@JsivaUrbantranz we would appreciate any relevant information you can share through DM regarding the delivery partner, so we can take appropriate action," the company wrote in the comments.
