Hyderabad hostel association warns of LPG shortage, dosa, chapati and puri may be stopped

Hostels in Hyderabad may soon stop serving several commonly consumed breakfast items after an association representing hostel owners flagged concerns over a shortage of commercial LPG cylinders, which it linked to the ongoing tensions in West Asia.

The IT Corridor Hostel Association issued a notice to hostel owners stating that the availability of commercial gas cylinders has become uncertain and could disrupt regular cooking operations. In view of the situation, the association urged hostel operators to reduce gas consumption and temporarily limit the preparation of food items that require longer cooking time or higher fuel usage.

In its press note, the association said the shortage has emerged amid the ongoing conflict involving the United States, Israel and Iran, which it claimed is beginning to affect supply chains. To manage the situation, hostel owners have been asked to follow certain temporary guidelines until gas availability improves.

No dosa,chapati or puri

According to the advisory, hostels may temporarily stop serving beverages such as tea and coffee. Popular breakfast items including dosa, chapati and puri may also not be prepared, as they require more time and gas for cooking. The association further noted that some curries and additional food items could be discontinued depending on the severity of the shortage.

The notice also stated that self-cooking facilities provided to residents in some hostels would be temporarily suspended to conserve gas. However, the association clarified that basic meals such as rice and other simple food items would continue to be served so that residents do not face a complete disruption in food availability.

Hostel owners were also advised to explore alternate cooking methods wherever possible and inform residents about the temporary changes in food services.

The development comes after similar concerns were raised in Bengaluru, where restaurants and eateries recently warned that a shortage of commercial LPG cylinders could force them to limit certain menu items. The association said the restrictions in Hyderabad are temporary and will remain in place only until the availability of commercial LPG improves.
