As a brain specialist, Dr Baibing Chen is aware of the "dont's" that most medical practitioners advise their patients, but the professor of neurology at the University of Michigan has recently shared a list of four common habits with CNBC Make It that, he personally steers clear of to maintain his own "brain health and sharp memory".
1. Always relying on GPS for navigation
Although GPS has made life easier, too much reliance on GPS can weaken your spatial memory over time, Dr Chen explained. He also mentioned a study that found that taxi drivers, who constantly memorise complex street layouts, have larger hippocampi – the brain's memory centres. Another recent study observed that taxi and ambulance drivers were less likely to die from Alzheimer’s disease than people in other jobs. "One possible explanation is that these jobs require frequent, real-time use of spatial and navigational skills, which may help maintain or even improve hippocampal health," the neurologist said.
2. Having too many energy drinks
Many people struggle with long days and constant fatigue, but energy drinks are not the answer, warns Dr Chen. "These beverages often contain high levels of caffeine, taurine, and B vitamins. Consuming large amounts can lead to cardiovascular issues like high blood pressure, palpitations, and even arrhythmias," he told the publication. "Neurologically, excessive energy drink consumption can cause insomnia, anxiety, restlessness, and, in more severe cases, seizures."
3. Overusing over-the-counter medications
Just because a medication is available without a prescription doesn't mean it's harmless, Dr Chen cautioned, adding that some lesser-known OTC products can cause surprising side effects. "I’ve seen bismuth toxicity from excessive Pepto-Bismol use lead to dementia-like symptoms. I’ve also seen patients who, after following advice from online wellness influencers, consumed too much zinc, resulting in spinal cord injuries," he said, adding it's crucial to always follow your doctor's instructions and the label, never exceeding the recommended dose.
