A recent social media post has once again brought attention to the real estate market in Mumbai, where rental prices often rival those in other metro cities for properties that are significantly smaller in size. Utkarsh Gupta shared a unique image of a luxury two-bedroom apartment in the upscale Pali Hill neighbourhood, highlighting an unusual setup: a washing machine installed directly above the toilet.
The post, shared on X (formerly Twitter), featured a photograph of the apartment’s compact bathroom where the washing machine was positioned above the commode. While the unconventional arrangement puzzled many, it was the rental price of Rs 1.35 lakh per month, along with a security deposit of Rs 4 lakh, that drew the most attention on social media.
In his post, Gupta wrote, “Only in Mumbai, you can front-load your washing machine while top loading your commode. At an affordable price of 1.35L per month!" His remark, although humorous, underscored the high cost of living in India's financial capital, especially in sought-after neighbourhoods like Pali Hill.

The post quickly went viral, prompting a wave of reactions from users commenting on the city's unique housing market. One user remarked on the impracticality of the setup, stating, "Amchi Mumbai is unbeatable. Tenant can have a tumble bath too, instead of a Tub bath.” Another user joked about the washing machine’s placement, writing, "It can serve as a backrest for those who read (study) newspaper while seated on commode."
While some took a light-hearted approach, others voiced concerns about the structural safety of the apartment. One user noted, "So if you look from outside there's a protruding metal box with washer just like the window air conditioner! I hope they haven't weakened the structural strength of the building.”
Another user, highlighting the absurdity of the situation, commented, “Load! While you unload! Mumbai saves you time!”
Meanwhile, a user called it an innovation and wrote, "But what if the used water from the washing machine is fed to the commode? I think it's a brilliant idea!"
