A Chinese mathematics genius has made waves on online after amassing 23 million followers five days after opening his first social media account on one of the country's most popular short video platforms, Douyin. Wei Dongyi, 33, an assistant professor at Peking University, has captured netizens' attention for his reclusive and austere lifestyle. Some online commentators have also shown concern regarding his health and appearance as Wei has lost several of his front teeth.
Originally from Shandong province, Wei prefers a life dedicated to research and teaching, admitting he'd rather listen to the radio than spend time online, South China Morning Post (SCMP) reported. The man had first gained national recognition in 2021 when he appeared in a street interview in worn-out clothing, carrying a water bottle and three steamed buns.

Viral debut and public reaction
On June 4, Wei uploaded his inaugural four-second self-introduction video on Douyin, which quickly went viral, racking up over 13 million likes. Several users commented on his missing front teeth. SCMP quoted one user as saying: "Look at his teeth and thin physique! Peking University and society should take greater responsibility for his health because he possesses so much more to contribute to Chinese mathematics."
Wei's cousin, however, has clarified that the assistant professor suffers from a dental problem called periodontitis and has been undergoing treatment. She also shared that Wei has been on a mostly vegetarian diet, supplemented by eggs and milk. She assured the public not to worry about Wei's wellbeing and that his family encourages him to stay active.
