Jeff Allen was only one of the 1,000 contestants who participated in MrBeast's game show.

When top YouTuber MrBeast aka Jimmy Donaldson put out a calling last year for 1,000 contestants for a new reality competition show, Jeff Allen decided to try his luck. He had just been laid off and was going through a lot of challenges since his youngest son had a rare brain disease. Turns out, luck was in his favour. Not only did he make it on the show as a contestant, but he also walked away with $10 million (about Rs 86 crore). It was the largest sum ever awarded in a competitive reality TV show.

“It’s a blessing to win $10 million and have 10 million eyes from all over the world on you and hear about my son’s rare brain disease,” Allen told Fortune. “But also it’s a little daunting.”

While playing the game on TV, Allen had to pull a monster truck and open mystery briefcases. Now, however, he's fighting new challenges such as figuring out what to do with his newfound millionaire status and how utilise it optimally to find a cure for his son’s disease.

Lucas was born with a rare genetic disorder called creatine transporter deficiency (CTD) which had a negative effect on his brain development and Allen has made it his life’s mission to find a cure for it while spreading awareness. It's one of the reasons why despite getting multiple opportunities to take one of the game’s bribes and even $1 million to leave the game, he stayed. Of the 1,000 contestants who took part in the show, some were eliminated in each episode while a few others were offered a bribe until only six remained by the 10th and final episode.

“My ultimate aim for joining Beast Games was to have a platform to talk about my son—Lucas’s rare brain disease,” he told Fortune. “I realised, wait, I’m this far, I can also win this thing... I got the best of both worlds, and it’s crazy to even think back to it.”

Allen has donated $200,000 of his $10 million to charity to help fund research for CTD and has set up an estate plan with a special needs trust to ensure his son has long-term financial support.
