A TikTok video capturing an Indian-origin woman eating curry and rice with her hand while conversing on the phone aboard the London Underground has ignited a fervent online debate, spotlighting cultural practices and public etiquette.

The footage, initially shared by TikTok user @ub1ub2, depicts the woman seated on a Tube train, consuming her meal with her hand—a customary practice in many South Asian cultures. Simultaneously, she is engaged in a phone conversation. The video has since proliferated across various social media platforms, amassing over a million views and eliciting a spectrum of reactions.

Critics have labeled the act as "unhygienic" and "inappropriate" for a public setting like the Tube, where eating is often discouraged due to confined spaces and potential mess. Concerns were also raised about the woman speaking loudly on the phone, potentially disturbing fellow passengers. Some commentators suggested she should have used cutlery to eat her meal.

Conversely, many have defended the woman's actions, emphasising the cultural significance of eating with one's hands and questioning the ethics of filming someone without consent. One user remarked, "She's not bothering you. She's enjoying her food, leave her alone and mind your own business. She could have been very hungry and needed food. Don't mock others. I've seen white people eat burgers on the train with their HANDS."

Another commenter highlighted a perceived double standard: "Plenty of Brits eat chips or sandwiches on trains, no one bats an eye. But an Indian woman eating rice with her hand? Suddenly, it's a crisis. Meanwhile, London Tube at night looks like a drug den. Funny how harmless traditions bother people more than actual public safety issues."

However, not all reactions were supportive. A user stated, "It's stupid to eat in trains like this, it's just not done. High time we see things like that change; it may not be illegal or immoral, but it does not make for good manners. It's a means of public transport, one has to be mindful of our behaviour, basic human decency."

The incident has reignited discussions about cultural norms, personal space, and respect for individual choices in public spaces. It also raises questions about the acceptability of certain behaviors on public transport and the importance of cultural sensitivity in diverse societies.

Regarding regulations, Transport for London (TfL) currently permits eating and drinking on the Tube. A statement on London.gov.uk clarifies, "There are currently no plans to ban customers from eating or drinking on the transport network. There are circumstances, such as during hot summer weather, when customers are encouraged to carry drinks with them. However, LU, for example, does take active steps to encourage customers to eat and drink responsibly; for example, recent campaigns have asked customers not to eat foods with strong odour and not to leave litter."
