A 33-year-old man in Kolkata was arrested after he stabbed his mother to death, spent the night with the dead body, and then confessed to a local tea vendor. "I've killed my mother. I haven't eaten all night. Is there any food?" the Times of India quoted Soumik Majumdar as saying.
The accused is reportedly undergoing treatment for depression and other psychological issues. The incident happened on Thursday at their residence in Rajarhat Vedic Village, and Majumdar was taken into custody on Friday morning. According to the police, he had a heated altercation with his 58-year-old mother, Debjani Majumdar, on Thursday night during which he stabbed her multiple times.
Police found the apartment floor covered in blood. The woman had sustained multiple stab wounds to the neck and shoulder. They also found a bloodied chair, a deep wound at the back of her head, and signs of struggle. The crime scene indicated that Majumdar flung his mother on the floor violently during the attack.
The police also said that he tried to stage the murder as a suicide by placing the weapon next to his mother and cleaning his own wounds. After he confessed to the crime, the tea vendor had alerted the building's security officials who called the police. After being arrested, however, Majumdar denied killing his mother, the publication reported.
Tea vendor Rabin Biswas told the Times of India that Majumdar had previously also made vague statements on having killed his mother, but later she was seen alive and unharmed. But this time, Biswas grew suspicious after Majumdar seemed disoriented.
The police said that Majumdar used to work at a BPO until about a year ago before getting laid off. He had been suffering from depression since then. Neighbours also reported that he would often go around asking people for money and food.
