Cancel culture has found its newest victim in the thumbs-up emoji.
A favourite among millennials, the thumbs-up emoji has apparently fallen out of favour with Gen Z. According to the New York Post, members of Generation Z have revealed they perceive the popular emoji to be hostile and rude, especially when used in the workplace.
This discussion began after a Reddit user posted about “not adult enough to be comfortable with the thumbs-up emoji reaction,” and others chimed in to agree.
“For younger people (I’m 24 for reference) the thumbs up emoji is used to be really passive aggressive. It’s super rude if someone just sends you a thumbs up,” one person wrote.
Others agreed that the emoji came off as dismissive or passive-aggressive.
As it turns out, the thumbs up emoji is not the only one in danger of getting cancelled. Perspectus Global conducted a survey of 2,000 people to come up with a list of cancelled emojis.
