Some argued that the man’s decision was justified, particularly for those who prioritise continuous learning and advancement.

A LinkedIn post by a software engineer has triggered an online discussion on workplace culture, career priorities, and the balance between ambition and stability, after she recounted how a new colleague resigned less than three weeks into the role because he felt the position offered insufficient challenges.

The engineer, Manisha Goyal, explained that her new team member, a former Microsoft employee from Singapore, decided to leave just 20 days after joining. When she asked him why, he replied that the role was “too easy” and risked halting his professional development. According to her account, he told her, “If I stay, I’ll stop growing. At 45, I’d enjoy this. But right now, I need the grind.”

Goyal reflected on the response by contrasting it with her own experience, admitting that she had been in a comparatively relaxed phase at work for two years. She shared the account on social media, where it resonated widely and sparked debate on whether professional growth should take precedence over job security and lower stress.

The post divided opinion. Some argued that the man’s decision was justified, particularly for those who prioritise continuous learning and advancement. One user commented: “He did it right. If you genuinely want to grow, you must be grinding. Sitting in a company without any real work or growth opportunities is enjoyable, but it’s also ruining your career.”

Others suggested that the situation required a broader perspective, noting that work which feels less demanding does not necessarily equate to stagnation. Another respondent wrote: “And bhai, you aren’t chilling man. You’re contributing for sure. It’s just that the learning curve has come in and you know how to do it efficiently. Never undersell yourself.”

Meanwhile, a third voice in the discussion warned against glorifying overwork, arguing that relentless effort does not guarantee security. That user remarked: “Stay away from guys like him. They think working hard makes them irreplaceable, but they are just as replaceable as everyone else. Learn the art of balancing work and life. When your work is relaxing, take a chill pill. When it requires your 100%, give it 200.”

Some observers also pointed to cultural factors, suggesting that the man’s outlook reflected Singapore’s fast-paced life.
