Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has once again sparked a debate, but this time the focus is not on his entrepreneurial ventures or controversial tweets. Instead, allegations about his mental health, drug use, and public conduct have been brought to light by Seth Abramson, a self-claimed biographer of Musk and a Harvard-educated attorney. Abramson took to X (formerly Twitter) to express his concerns, warning of the potential risks Musk’s behaviour poses to the United States.
“I legitimately believe Elon Musk may be going mad,” Abramson stated in a widely discussed post. He claimed to have been monitoring Musk’s online behaviour for over two years, citing Musk’s own admissions of mental health struggles, heavy drug use, and stress as indicators of a deteriorating state.
Abramson warned that these personal challenges could lead to serious public consequences, particularly given Musk’s influential roles across several critical industries and his impending appointment in Donald Trump’s administration as the head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE).
“His madness and increasing incitement of violence endanger us all,” Abramson wrote, adding that immediate action was needed to “protect America from Elon Musk.” He suggested measures such as terminating U.S. government contracts with Musk, launching lawsuits to block unconstitutional initiatives, and initiating federal investigations.
I legitimately believe Elon Musk may be going mad. I'm a Musk biographer who has been tracking his online behavior for the last two yearsand given that he's admitted to all of mental illness, heavy drug use, and crippling stress, it is now reasonable to fear he is deeply unwell.Seth Abramson (@SethAbramson) January 6, 2025
Despite his recommendations, Abramson expressed scepticism about any such action being taken, noting the limited time remaining before Trump’s administration assumes office.
Abramson’s thread ignited a flurry of responses on social media. Some users agreed with his assessment, pointing out Musk’s tendency to involve himself in global issues while allegedly neglecting personal matters. “The world’s richest man could be someone great, but instead turns out to be a thin-skinned, drug-addled Bond villain,” one user commented.
Another remarked, “Why doesn’t he buy a private island and spend the rest of his life growing vegetables and walking on the beach? It’s what I would do.”
However, Musk’s sister, Tosca Musk, came to his defence, dismissing Abramson’s claims as unfounded. “No. You are wrong. On so many levels,” she responded.

The debate comes amid Musk’s growing involvement in politics. Recently, he launched a controversial poll on X asking whether the United States should “liberate the British from the tyrannical government,” further fuelling discussions about his global influence.
Musk’s critics, including Abramson, have accused him of leveraging his platform to spread polarising narratives and interfering in matters beyond his purview. Abramson previously described Musk as “deranged and creepy” for allegedly crashing a dinner between Donald Trump and Jeff Bezos.
