Renowned actor Govinda narrowly escaped a serious tragedy after a misfiring of his licensed gun left him with a bullet injury to his leg. Hours after being rushed to a Mumbai hospital, the Shiv Sena leader released an emotional audio message thanking his fans, parents, and guru for their blessings, which he credits for his survival.
"I was hit by a bullet, but it has been extracted. I thank the doctors here and your prayers," Govinda, 60, said in the audio message.
The accident occurred early today around 4:45 am at Govinda’s Juhu residence when he was preparing to leave for the airport to board a flight to Kolkata.
According to his manager, Shashi Sinha, the actor was handling his licensed revolver when it accidentally slipped from his hand and discharged upon hitting the ground, striking him just below the knee. Govinda was alone at the time, with his wife, Sunita Ahuja, already in Kolkata.
Govinda managed to immediately inform both his wife and his manager about the incident before Mumbai Police arrived at his home and rushed him to Criticare Hospital in Juhu at 5.15 am. His condition is reported to be stable, and his daughter Tina is by his side at the hospital. Sunita Ahuja has since returned to Mumbai after learning of her husband's injury.
Govinda has not filed any official complaint regarding the incident. His manager said that the actor was expected to make a full recovery and praised the quick action of the medical staff.
The actor is widely known for his performances in 80s and 90s, especially in David Dhawan's 'Number 1' movies. Govinda is also a former Member of Parliament.
