Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari has named his daughter, Aseefa Bhutto Zardari, as the country's First Lady in an unprecedented move that defies long-standing traditions. This landmark decision not only highlights a significant shift in the nation's political landscape but also accentuates the evolving role of women in governance.

Here are 5 points about Aseefa Bhutto Zardari:

  1. Aseefa Bhutto Zardari will be stepping into a role traditionally reserved for the President's wife.
  2. The 31-year-old is the youngest child of Asif Ali Zardari and the late Benazir Bhutto — Pakistan's first female Prime Minister — and has been a prominent figure beside her father throughout his political journey. Aseefa reportedly made her political debut in 2020 at a PPP rally.
  3. She has degrees from Oxford Brookes University, University College London, and the University of Edinburgh.
  4. Her active involvement in the Pakistan Peoples Party’s (PPP) electoral campaigns and her role as Pakistan's Ambassador for polio eradication have made her a familiar face to the Pakistani public.
  5. Aseefa visited Nobel Laureate Malala Yousafzai in Birmingham, alongside her father, and her active social media presence have contributed to her growing influence in Pakistani politics and beyond.

The decision to appoint Aseefa as First Lady came after President Zardari was sworn in for his second term, marking him as the only civilian to be elected head of state twice, excluding military leaders. The role of First Lady remained vacant during Zardari's first tenure following the assassination of Benazir Bhutto in 2007.

Zardari, the co-chairman of Pakistan Peoples Party, was sworn in as the 14th President of the crisis-hit nation on Sunday.
