The oil spill from cargo ship RAK Carrier, which sank Thursday afternoon near the coast of Mumbai, has slowed to 1 tonne per hour, Director General of Shipping said on Monday.
Officials are also taking steps to either seal the source of leakage from the ship or debunker the oil from the sunken vessel soon, the statement added.
The ship was carrying 290 tonnes of fuel oil, 49 tonnes of diesel, local media reports said about the Panama flagged ship.
The trail of the oil leak is visible up to 12 nautical miles, with a very thick cover upto 1 nautical mile and a thick cover upto 2 nautical miles, the statement added.
Three coast guard vessels have been deployed to neutralise the affected area.
