Three feared killed in mine mishap in Goa

At least three persons were feared dead after a ''tailing stack'' of a mine collapsed at Cuddegal, Sanvordem, in South Goa.

At least three persons were feared dead after a ''tailing stack'' of a mine collapsed at Cuddegal, Sanvordem, in South Goa.

The incident took place Friday night around 8.30 pm at the mineral processing plant at 50 kms, due to incessant rains, that have battered the state for last two days.

Deputy Collector Agnelo Fernandes, who rushed to the site with district officials immediately after the mishap, said the ''tailing stack'' wall came crashing down on a mineral dressing engineer, a security guard, a worker, who are feared dead.

Fomento Sociedade, the company, which operates this plant, said rescue work is on and there are no possibilities of any more casualties.

Seven others, who were trapped in the debris have, however been rescued but those three are still missing.

Searches for them are on, a company spokesman said.

Also, there has been extensive damage to the beneficiation plant in the incident. The plant was used to process the ore, which was extracted from the mines.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Digambar Kamat said he has dispatched mining department officials to the site, who will be reporting back on the facts of the incident.

"I cannot comment, till I receive the reports," said Kamat, who is also the State Mines minister.
