The government today approved a Rs 1,060 crore project for building a dry bulk terminal at the Kandla Port Trust on build, operate and transfer (BOT) basis.

The decision was taken by the Cabinet Committee on Infrastructure (CCI).

"The capacity of the project is 14.112 million tonnes per annum for catering to four vessels at a time viz. two vessels, each of 1,00,000 DWT (dead weight tonnage) ...and two vessels, each of 75,000 DWT," an official statement said here.

The project to be completed within two years envisages construction, operation and maintenance of an off-shore berthing structure with four berthing faces by single BOT operator for a license period of 30 years.

The infrastructure development project was formulated to handle increased container traffic and to boost EXIM Trade.

The statement said it will be developed on public-private-partnership (PPP) mode and will have the state of the art technology, available in the international market for handling cargo, which in turn will improve the efficiency
and capacity of the Port and also reduce turn around time of the vessels.

Kandla port is one of the major 13 Centre-owned ports in the country.
