The Central Excise Department today detained a city-based businessman after questioning him in connection with the Commonwealth Games scam.

According to Excise Department sources, Purushottam Gupta, who deals in iron at Nehru Grounds here, was taken into their custody after it was found that he had made false bills worth crore of rupees on the basis of which he was paid by the CWG authorities.

After scrutinising the account books of the trader, it was found that he had prepared the bills despite not supplying the material for the Games held in October last year and was also paid for the same, the sources said.

Gupta was being questioned by the Department for the past few days, they said.
