A buffalo in Maharashtra's Washim district swallowed a woman's 25 gm gold mangalsutra worth Rs 1.5 lakh that was mixed with fodder, an Indian Express report said.
The incident took place in Sarsi village of the district at the house of a soyabean growing farmer named Ramhari Bhoir, who owns a buffalo. On Wednesday, Bhoir's wife Geeta cleaned the soyabean brought by her husband and kept them in a bowl, to feed the buffalo later.
She also kept her mangalsutra in the same bowl, before heading for a bath. Following day, she fed the buffalo the soyabean husks that were kept in the bowl. However, along with the soyabean, the buffalo ate away her mangalsutra.
During the search for the thread, Geeta could not recollect where she had kept the mangalsutra, but later realised it was kept in the bowl in which the soyabean was there. On checking the bowl, the mangalsutra was missing.

Suspecting that the buffalo had swallowed the thread and worried over the animal's health, Bhoir and his family consulted a veterinarian. The doctors used a metal detector and found that the mangalsutra was in the buffalo's stomach.
The doctors did a sonography to detect the thread's location and informed the family that the buffalo had to undergo surgery. As per a local health official-Dr Balasaheb Kondane- the animal underwent a two-hour long surgery, following which the doctors managed to retrieve the mangalsutra.
The doctors also said that the buffalo was kept under observation and was doing well, after the surgery.
