Phoebe Gates, daughter of billionaire philanthropist Bill Gates, has recently revealed that she uses ChatGPT almost every day to create viral content for her fashion tech startup, Phia. The 22-year-old spoke about her approach to leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) in a recent episode of "The Burnouts" podcast, which she hosts with co-founder Sophia Kianni.
Gates said that rather than relying on guesswork, Phia's strategy is built on meticulous data analysis and reverse engineering online success. "I use AI almost every single day, and it supercharges me," she said. "We're not just guessing what works, we are using tools to decode what already has."
Kianni elaborated on their method, explaining they don't "start from scratch" but rather study existing top-performing videos across platforms like Instagram and TikTok. These videos are meticulously cataloged into spreadsheets, breaking down their success factors – from lighting and pacing to narrative structure and emotional tone.
"We'll create a spreadsheet, these are the top videos, here's why each one worked, and then we reverse engineer how to recreate that success," Gates explained. ChatGPT then becomes a pivotal tool in this process. After transcribing and analysing successful content, they use the AI to pinpoint the exact elements that make a video pop. With these insights, ChatGPT is then prompted to generate scripts and ideas that align with Phia's brand identity and values, ensuring content is both viral-ready and authentic.
Bill Gates shares why he didn't fund daughter's new business
Interestingly, Phoebe Gates's entrepreneurial journey has been entirely self-funded, a point her father, Bill Gates, has candidly discussed. The Microsoft co-founder admitted to The New York Times that his "initial thoughts when she geared up to launch her company were: 'Oh boy, she's going to come and ask.'" While he would have financially supported her, he acknowledged it would have come with "strings attached" like "business reviews," which he found potentially "tricky" and preferred to avoid.
Phoebe also shared on "The Burnouts" podcast that her father initially expressed apprehension about her startup plans, saying, "'Are you sure you want to do this?'" She also revealed her parents' strong stance against her dropping out of school, despite her father famously doing so to build Microsoft. "They were very much like, 'You need to finish your degree; you don't just get to like, drop out and do a company,'" Phoebe recounted, highlighting the ironic contrast with her father's own path.
