The Tata Harrier has finally been revealed but its prices are still under wraps. We expect the SUV to be priced in the range of Rs 16-21 lakh, which means it will be competing with the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Mahindra XUV500 and Jeep Compass.
The Harrier will be launched with a diesel engine, so we'll compare only the diesel variants of each of its competitors. It sports a 2-litre Kryotec that churns out 138 hp and 350 Nm of torque.
The Jeep Compass gets the same engine with a higher power output of 171 hp, but generates the same amount of torque -- 350 Nm. The 2.2-litre mHawk of the Mahindra XUV500 is the biggest engine in this class, while the Hyundai Creta's 1.6-litre engine is the smallest.
All cars come with a 6-speed manual transmission and front wheel drive, but the Creta and the XUV500 also have automatic variants, while the Compass and XUV500 have all-wheel drive variants.
In terms of dimensions, however, the Harrier takes the cake. It has height and width of 4,598 mm and 1,894 mm, respectively. The Compass and XUV500 come very close with heights of 4,395 mm and 4,585 mm, while the XUV500 has a similar width of 1,890 mm.
The Harrier also sports the largest wheelbase in the segment -- 2741 mm -- while its ground clearance is also marginally higher than the competition at 205 mm.
In terms of safety features, the Harrier gets six airbags, anti-lock braking system (ABS), electronic stability programme (ESP), and electronic braking distribution (EBD).
Other features include, traction control, hill hold assist, hill-descent control, roll-over mitigation, ISOFIX child mounts and a reverse parking camera. The competition features more or less the same systems.
Inside the cabin, the Harrier sports the largest infotainment system with an 8.8-inch touchscreen display and nine speakers. Now, while all cars get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, the Creta and Mahindra get navigation also built in to the system.
