Reddit has rolled out a new video button for iOS users. Pressing the button takes you to a vertical, expanding list of video content pulled from various subreddits that you follow and some that you might be interested in.
As per The Verge, the feature closely resembles TikTok feeds in appearance. It has interactable options such as downvotes and upvotes, commenting and even awarding users some Reddit currency. You can also share what you like directly from the feed itself.
Mysteriously, Reddit has remained mum on the algorithms it is using to recommend videos to users, from subreddits they don't follow. When asked if the feature had a title or how the videos are collected on an individual feed, Reddit declined to comment.
Speaking with Techcrunch, a spokesperson for the company said that most iOS users should see the new video button pop up next to the search bar. It will also show you content from subs closely related to your preference, so if you follow r/printmaking, you are likely to see content recommended from r/pottery and r/bookbinding.
“Reddit’s mission is to bring community and belonging to everyone in the world, and subsequently, Reddit’s video team’s mission is to bring community through video,” the Reddit spokesperson said.
“Over the course of the last year, our goal was to build a unified video player, and re-envision the player interface to match what users (new and old) expect when it comes to an in-app video player — especially commenting, viewing, engaging and discovering new content and communities through video,” they added.
