OpenAI research scientist and founding member Andrej Karpathy has announced his departure from the company, marking the most notable exit since last year's mass resignation of senior employees during the boardroom turmoil.
Karpathy announced his departure from OpenAI in a post on X, stating that he is leaving to pursue personal projects.
"Hi everyone yes, I left OpenAI yesterday. First of all nothing "happened" and it’s not a result of any particular event, issue or drama (but please keep the conspiracy theories coming as they are highly entertaining :))," he said in a post on X.

"Actually, being at OpenAI over the last ~year has been really great - the team is really strong, the people are wonderful, and the roadmap is very exciting, and I think we all have a lot to look forward to. My immediate plan is to work on my personal projects and see what happens. Those of you who’ve followed me for a while may have a sense for what that might look like ;) Cheers," he added.
This marks Karpathy's second departure from OpenAI, having previously left in June 2017 to join Tesla as senior director of AI. He led the computer vision team for Tesla Autopilot until July 2022.

Karpathy's exit from OpenAI is the most significant since several senior staff members resigned following the board's attempt to oust CEO Sam Altman in November 2023. Those employees rejoined the company after the board reversed its decision.
