Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) on Tuesday unveiled the country's first driverless tractor.

The tractor was developed at the automobile giant's research facility in Chennai.
The tractor can auto-steer and is able to detect and avoid obstacles. It is also capable of making automatic headland turns, automatic lift and drops and make emergency stops.

The company also said that the technology will be made available across global markets including USA and Japan.

According to the M&M, foray into the driverless automobile space will give Mahindra tractors a competitive edge in global markets.

Pawan Goenka, Managing Director of M&M, said: “Our tractor R&D has always been at the forefront of pioneering cutting edge solutions. Today’s display of the driverless tractor is another proud moment for us, as it opens up new possibilities in farming.”

Mahindra also announced plans to offer the driverless tractor technology across its range of tractors over a period of time.

On Monday, the sports utility vehicle specialist had announced exploration of strategic alliance with United States (US) automotive giant Ford in areas of product development, future mobility, electric and connected vehicles.
