OverdriveNissan`s Independent Steering Control system

OverdriveNissan's Independent Steering Control system
October 18, 2012 / 22:45 IST

We have heard of hydraulic power and electric assist steering systems but now Nissan is turning this concept on the head by showcasing the Independent Control Steering technology that allows independent control of a vehicle's steering inputs and tyre angle. This next-generation steering system eliminates the use of a mechanical link to transmit the steering inputs to the tyres and instead understands the driver's inputs and controls the tyres via electronic signals. Nissan even says that the instant feedback that this system gives is also adjustable and drivers can choose between Sport or Standard modes depending on the roads that they drive on. The driver will also be isolated from road vibrations due to the fact that the steering wheel is isolated from the rest of the steering system.

To reduce driver fatigue, Nissan has also added a camera to the steering system which constantly monitors the driving pattern so that the driver doesn't have to make small corrections while going in a straight line. If the system detects crosswinds, it also auto corrects the vehicle's trajectory. In case of a power loss, the steering relies on the mechanical link so that the driver can control the car.
