Apple warns iPhone users of targeted spyware attack

Yesterday night, Apple sent out threat notifications to iPhone users in 92 countries, including India, with a serious warning.

What, you ask? The Cupertino tech giant has warned some of its users that they may have been victims of mercenary spyware attacks, similar to those used by the NSO Group's Pegasus.

  • Apple has notified users of such threats in over 150 countries since 2021, the company said in the notification
  • Apple has also dropped the term 'state-sponsored' attacks from its threat notifications and support page, replacing it with 'mercenary spyware attacks'

The change comes after the iPhone maker was caught in a political firestorm in October last year, after the opposition accused the government of spying. The IT ministry later sent a notice to Apple and also initiated an investigation, with the company even sending its technical and cybersecurity experts to the country.

Apple's growth market: India is emerging as a key market for Apple, both in terms of sales and manufacturing capabilities. The company has been seeing record revenue growth from iPhone sales in India for the past several quarters.
