In an article in the Outlook magazine, Varun said death sentence only legalises vengeance and ought to be done away with. He argued that death penalty has historically enabled tyranny and that its utility of is proving to be anachronistic.
We need the death penalty for our own reasons at this stage in our development as a civilised society.
Yakub Memon's tragic hanging would have served a higher purpose if we as a nation can rise above partisanship and get some things done right. A strong state needs to emerge from the crumbling edifice of a weak state.
Speaking on the case, senior lawyer Ujjwal Nikam said, "the SC has rejected all the contentions raised by Yakub Memon. The Maharashtra Governor and the President will have to take the decision on the mercy petition today itself."
1993 Mumbai blasts convict Yakub Memon has filed a fresh mercy petition with President Pranab Mukherjee just a day before he is scheduled to be hanged.
It would be a national tragedy of epic proportions and a significant miscarriage of justice if Yakub Memon hangs for his role in the 1993 Mumbai blasts. Only one final decision by the Maharashtra Governor, on Memon's mercy petition, and a third appeal in the Supreme Court now stand between him and the hangman.
The petition came amid a huge debate over Memon's hanging and BJP's condemnation of remarks by parties over the execution, saying such a defence is happening due to "petty politics".
On July 15, the Maharashtra government had decided to execute Memon on July 30. The hanging is likely to take place at Nagpur Central Jail.
The authorities are slated to go ahead with the execution of Yakub if the Supreme Court rejects a curative petition filed against his death sentence. The plea is scheduled to come up for hearing in the apex court on July 21.
Actor Sanjay Dutt's lawyer Satish Maneshinde says, "Once we receive the Supreme Court order, we will then advise Dutt. Unfortunate that this has happened. We will abide the Supreme Court's order."
