The tennis icon has left an 'indelible mark' on Indian sports and inspired a new generation of players, PM Modi said in the heartfelt letter.
It was not the fairy tale ending she hoped for but Sania Mirza, who ended runners-up at the Australian Open mixed double finals, inspired millions of youngsters at home and abroad, and will always have a special place in the history of Indian tennis
The Brazilian pair of Luisa Stefani and Rafael Matos beat India's Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna 7-6 (2), 6-2 to win the Australian Open mixed doubles title.
Sania Mirza was ranked No. 27 in singles, defeated Grand Slam winners and reached the 4th round of a major. Not since the 1980s has an Indian player posted such results, something which gets overlooked due to her doubles chapter.
Mirza has been playing on the professional tour since 2003 and it has been 19 years of the Hyderabadi playing tennis at the top.
