The Priv, which was first officially announced in October 2015 and went on sale in November 2015 in US and Canada (followed by other markets), has been launched in India with a premium price tag of Rs 62,990. The phone will go on sale in Indian markets from January 30.
First unveiled in October, Priv marks the BlackBerry's foray into Android-based smartphones. According to invites sent by the company, BlackBerry will unveil Priv, "the secure smartphone powered by Android" on January 28.
"The company is doing reasonably well now, from a financial standpoint, so now our focus is to grow our businesses," CEO John Chen told CNBC at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO Summit in Manila.
The company is betting the Priv's large curved screen, full array of Android apps from the Google Play store and blend of productivity and security features will help it rebuild its share of the smartphone market, which has slid to under one percent.
