In an exclusive conversation with MoneyControl, BJP MP PP Chaudhary, who headed the 30-member committee, said the proposed law could lay the foundation of a strong digital economy and that the objections to the exemption provision were uncalled for.
The corporate affairs ministry has already struck off over 2.26 lakh firms for non-filing of financial statements or annual returns for a continuous period of two years or more as part of the first phase of the drive.
Besides, over 2.26 lakh firms have been de-registered for not filing the requisite returns under the Companies Act for two or more years. While over three lakh directors have also been barred from taking up board positions.
"Currently about 8000 websites are hosted on NICNET. The total number of websites hosted on NICNET that have been defaced since 2014 is 221," Minister of State of Electronics and IT PP Chaudhary said in Rajya Sabha.
