Foxconn, the world’s largest assembler of iPhones and other electronics, is expanding in India as geopolitical tensions and economic uncertainty begin to disrupt its primary operations in China.
Foxconn's India representative V Lee said the company will work even harder to present PM Modi with a greater birthday gift next year by doubling employment, FDI, and business size in the country.
The expected production for FY23 is more than twice the requirement needed to qualify for the production linked incentive scheme (PLI) which requires both Foxconn and Wistron to make iPhones worth Rs 8,000 crore each.
The company official, speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity, said the factory reopened with one shift and 120 workers, adding it would take over two months for the plant to produce at full capacity.
The Foxconn plant, located in the state of Tamil Nadu, was closed on December 18 following protests over 250 of its workers being treated for food poisoning. Apple has since placed the factory on probation after discovering that some dormitories and dining rooms did not meet required standards.
The Foxconn plant, located in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, was closed on Dec. 18, following protests after discovering that some dormitories and dining rooms did not meet required standards.
"Foxconn India MD met the Commerce Minister and has raised two specific demands. One was related to push for exports," an official source told PTI.
The company has also hired most of around 3,000 staff at Nokia's facility at Sriperumbudur where production was suspended last year after a long drawn tax dispute.
