Situated in Easter Europe, Ukraine is the second largest country by area in Europe by area after Russia. Ukraine shares its international borders with Russia, Belarus, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Moldova, and has a coastline along the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea. Its capital is Kyiv. In 1922, the Bolsheviks forcibly reconstituted the Ukrainian People's Republic into the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, which became a founding member of the Soviet Union in 1922.
