On the final webisode of the 4-part ‘Building for Bharat: Empowering Sustainable and Inclusive Innovation’ series, which brought viewers face-to-face with some of the country’s most dynamic entrepreneurs and investors, Alakh Pandey, Founder & CEO of PhysicsWallah, outlined his vision for democratizing education. Organized as part of Leap To Unicorn Season 3, a platform for startup growth and funding created by IDFC FIRST Bank, in association with Moneycontrol and CNBC-TV18, the interview revealed how a bootstrapped YouTube channel evolved into a profitable EdTech unicorn while prioritizing accessibility.

Alakh Pandey’s journey began in a single room in Prayagraj, teaching via a mobile phone propped on books. This frugal ethos still persists. “It’s because of reach and accessibility that we are profitable,” he noted, underscoring PhysicsWallah’s mission to serve students in India’s remotest corners. Unlike competitors reliant on premium pricing, the platform offers free content and low-cost courses, ensuring affordability without compromising quality.

Central to this strategy is relatability. “The advantage with me is I’m from Allahabad. Students can relate to my style of teaching,” Alakh Pandey explained, emphasizing that educators must mirror their audience’s cultural context. This philosophy extends to hiring as well; Alakh Pandey revealed how some of his former students have become key decision makers at PhysicsWallah.

Technology, while critical, remains secondary to the needs of education. PhysicsWallah’s PiBox, a device that converts ordinary TVs into smartboards, epitomizes judicious tech deployment. Designed for rural users with limited connectivity, it reflects Alakh Pandey’s belief that innovation must adapt to infrastructural constraints. “Technology is always a step behind education,” he asserted, though acknowledging technology’s role as a force multiplier.

Alakh Pandey’s entrepreneurial insights blend pragmatism and idealism. Dismissing shortcuts, he advised founders, “Stop looking outside. What gets built quickly doesn’t usually sustain.” He credits his success to student feedback, calling children his “mentors”, along with his relentless focus on audience needs. “The first and last step should be to care about your target audience,” he said, recalling an investor’s advice to prioritize cost control over fee hikes, a move that preserved accessibility.

For Alakh Pandey, entrepreneurship demands resilience. “It’s hard and suitable only for those with passion,” he warned. Yet, his story, a teacher scaling a $ 2.8 billion venture from the ground up, proves that mission-driven models can thrive. As EdTech confronts skepticism, PhysicsWallah offers a blueprint - blend empathy with execution, and let inclusivity drive growth.
