A woman panchayat chief in West Bengal was reportedly assaulted and her clothes were torn off after two factions of the Trinamool Congress clashed during a panchayat meeting.
The panchayat chief, Deepali Singh, was reportedly brutally thrashed and ink was smeared on her face when the meeting of the Trinamool-led Chhangual panchayat in Kharagpur block II.
The clash happened because of a dispute related to the allocation of the development works in different areas that fall under the panchayat jurisdiction. Another member of the gram panchayat, Sujata De, had objected to the exclusion of the construction of a guard wall in her area, India Today reported.
Following this, a heated argument broke out between two factions and Deepali alleged that Sujata as well as her supporters - who are all Trinamool workers - barged into her office and beat her up, grabbed her hair, tore her clothes and put ink on her face forcefully.
After that, the supporters of both the leaders clashed inside the office and then Sujata locked the panchayat office.
Police reportedly intervened to bring the situation under control. The joint Block Development Officer (BDO) of Kharagpur Block No. 2 also intervened.
India Today reported that Deepali broke down while speaking to the media about the incident.
